There are a few reasons.
It's simple. Cigars are viewed as something macho. The mere sight of a cigar is intimidating to most people. It's big and fat, and they can be really expensive. The value of a cigar is probably what entices rich people to smoke them in the first place. They can afford them.
You often see in the movies gangsters or men with a lot of power, like political figures, or war criminals, smoking cigars. They are typecasted and stereotyped as people who use them. They make them look powerful, and they envoke strength and vitality. Women are attracted to this persona.
Why?
Cigar smoke is not like cigarette smoke. It's almost unbearable in public places. It's absolutely terrible. You ever go to a restaurant where there is outside seating, and in the distance, someone is having a cigar? What does it smell like? Is it pleasant? If not, do you think it is pleasant to the dozens of people around you? Probably not. It's not a nice smell. You can usually pick them out from a block away, it's that potent.
All it really does is make you look stupid, weak, and disgusting. It's an unpleasant smell, and it's disrespectful towards others.
People use them when a baby is born. Why? To celebrate the occasion, of course. And why do they celebrate the occasion with a cigar? Probably because it evokes the sense of power, control, and confidence. It's showing off to other people.
Repeated use of them eventually turns into an increased tolerance. There is more nicotine in one cigar than there is in an entire pack of regular cigarettes! That is an extreme case, which exists in the premium world, but that is an astounding piece of information.
Most people don't inhale, that is true, but that doesn't exempt them from the dangers, and all the toxins that go along with it. Some people do inhale, so that's a lot of nicotine and tar they are inhaling from each one. It's pretty disgusting, and quite deadly.
In a nutshell, they're used to show off and look powerful. They want to appear like they have money, and that they can do whatever they want. It's too bad they look stupid doing it.
