WHY DO PEOPLE SMOKE?

Everybody knows smoking is bad for you. But then why do they do it? Why do people continue to do something they inherently know is killing them? Don't they know right from wrong? Do they even care? Do they do it because they don't respect themselves?

Here are some reasons why they do...

I think the #1 reason why people smoke is because they are flat-out addicted. I was, too. People find it incredibly difficult to quit and they end up relapsing time and time again. It's very easy to start back up. It's very easy to give into the mind games that nicotine play on you. You'll see when you quit. You'll immediately notice the withdrawal symptoms, and the crazy scenarios that go through your head.

Nicotine is one the most addictive things on the planet, and it will stop at nothing to get you to continue using, and keep you addicted forever, until you die.

Another answer might be because of peer pressure. Everyone in the world goes through it at some point in their life. No one is exempt from it. It doesn't matter if you're in high school, college, 30 years old, 40 years old, or even 50 years old. There's always going to be some sort of outside influence trying to persuade you to light up.

Maybe some people smoke because all of their friends do. It happens. Maybe they feel like the pressure would be too much if they quit, because everyone around them continues to use tobacco. It's incredibly difficult when people smoke around you 24/7. It's almost impossible. You have to detach yourself from that environment. You can't stop, and then go hangout at a party. You'll end up in relapse and back to square one.

Some people just don't care. They don't have enough self-respect. They don't care about lung cancer, or a horrible death. They aren't afraid of that. But they know they intend on using tobacco for the rest of their lives.

Some people are so wrapped up in their addiction that it becomes engraved into every part of their daily routine. It takes over their life. They are powerless to do anything about it because they have become a slave to it. They feel they have to.

Other people think it looks cool, and that they will be perceived as cooler by others. It's such a complete lie. It doesn't make you look cool, it makes you look stupid! But that doesn't stop most people. They think it's the cool think to do to go outside and puff away, regardless of what temperature it is outside. It could be 40 below and they'd still go outside and think they're cooler than others.

I smoked because I was stressed out at work, and in my mind, it took away some of that stress. Had I known if I was not a smoker in the first place, I would not be getting stressed out nearly as much. It causes anxiety, it doesn't resolve it. Everyone has it backwards.

So why do people do it? There are 100's of answers. Yet, all of them are stupid reasons. There isn't a single good reason to continue. There just isn't. It's not healthy, it's killing you, it doesn't relieve stress, it suppresses your appetite, it increases your heart rate, and it causes diseases. Are those good reasons? Absolutely not!
